El Cielo
El Cielo — 'heaven' — is a shallow, crystal-clear sandbar off Cozumel's southwest coast. Stand in waist-deep water among cushion starfish and spot rays gliding over white sand. It is the most requested stop on every private charter.

What you'll visit
The starfish sandbar
A wide field of white sand where dozens of red and orange cushion sea stars rest on the bottom. The water is so clear it looks like you're floating in the sky — that's where the name 'El Cielo' (heaven) comes from.
El Cielito, the natural pool
Nearby, an even shallower turquoise pool where southern stingrays glide past your feet. Perfect for photos, floating with a cold drink and relaxing with your group.
Snorkel at your own pace
Your bilingual crew sets you up with mask, fins and a life vest, points out wildlife and keeps an eye on everyone. Non-swimmers can simply stand on the sand.

Marine life you may see
Cushion sea star
Oreaster reticulatus
The stars of the show: large, thick sea stars in red, orange and tan.
Southern stingray
Hypanus americanus
Calm rays that glide over the sand, often just a few feet away.
Spotted eagle ray
Aetobatus narinari
Graceful rays with white spots, seen 'flying' along the edges.
Parrotfish & blue tang
Scaridae · Acanthurus coeruleus
Colorful reef fish around the patches of seagrass and coral.
Sea turtles
Chelonia mydas
Green turtles sometimes pass through on the way to the reef.
Good to know
- Look, don't touch: starfish are protected and can't breathe out of the water.
- Shuffle your feet on the sand so rays know you're there.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen and bring a waterproof phone case.
